First Call seeks thought-provoking, dynamic photographs taken by Penn undergraduates to grace our front cover. The standalone cover photo is the first thing our readers see when they pick up a First Call— a photo that grab readers’ attention and introduces them to the magazine.
In our new magazine format, the front cover photo will occupy the entire front page. This is a great opportunity to publish your work for the University at large.
We gladly accept submissions from any interested students. Here are some guidelines:
- Color: Photos are printed in black and white. While you can submit either color or black and white photography, remember that the end result will be black and white. Photos that have high dark-light contrast work best in this format (usually no night shots).
- File type: Submit photos in an electronic format. If photos are in physical form, please scan them for submission. We prefer jpegs, tiff, or png files.
- Resolution: At least 200ppi resolution is necessary - that is, about 1700 x 2200 pixels is needed. A 5MP digital camera should do the trick.
- Orientation: Our new magazine size (8.25” x 10.375”) layout caters to portrait, rather than landscape-oriented, photographs. Photos that are submitted in a landscape orientation will be cropped to accommodate.
- Identification: Please include your name, class year, upenn.edu e-mail address, and a title for your photo(s) (where applicable).
E-mail photo submissions to fcpaper@gmail.com for consideration. The deadline for artwork is the Wednesday prior to each issue print date. See First Call’s Advertise page for issue date information and e-mail the above address with any questions or concerns.
